Paint what you cannot see, write what you cannot say...
I see color as communication, and am constantly trying to increase my vocabulary through experimentation with color-mixing, juxtaposition, chance techniques and composition. I like to purposely use colors i am not fond of, and through unique use, try and find a way to create connections between myself and the color, and find a way to get the color to speak.
I feel a lot of how colors make us feel is not innate, but cultural, and cultivated by experience. My goal is to be comfortable speaking in whatever hue i decide to challenge myself with. Most of what i have discovered is not the topic of a single painting, but "hidden" throughout many works. I don't set out to create a finished piece usually, and work on many paintings simultaneously, so i can see how far certain trains of color take me.
Most of my works are therefore "studies." I let the unfolding of the painting take place, letting the colors tell me where to go, always looking for an opportunity to challenge my impulses by introducing a new juxtaposition.
My background in mainly in poetry and painting, but I have done quite a bit of photography, printmaking, wood-sculpting...gardening...and am venturing into music now as well. I always try to incorporate what i encounter in these other arts into painting, in order to challenge myself and the medium, I also make sure to look at the world and experience it, hear its sounds, feel its sensations...because with them everything is more rich.
I hope you enjoy the work!
Best,
Alex
